Things to Do in Isla Mujeres, Island of Women

Early in our travels, our travel agent recommended that we visit Isla Mujeres.  It wasn’t until recently that we had the opportunity to do so while staying at the Iberostar Paraiso Delmar in Riviera Maya, Mexico. We booked the tour through Apple Vacations/Amstar with the representative on the property. Our excursion included transportation to Cancun, a boat ride to the island of Isla Mujeres, food, swimming, drinks, and unlimited ziplining over the water.

Things to do in Isla Mujeres and Isla Mujeres Attractions

When you visit Isla Mujeres, you can enjoy the white sand beach, palm trees, scuba diving, the underwater museum, explore in a golf cart, see marine life, including endangered sea turtles and whale sharks, shop, visit local restaurants, and more. The dock to board the Isla Mujeres ferry to this beautiful island is approximately 8 miles from Downtown Cancun and about an hour’s drive from Playa Del Carmen. While there, take your time to explore Isla Mujeres, and all the entire island has to offer. In addition to taking a ferry, you can get to Isla Mujeres by catamaran.

I’d suggest staying toward the northern end of Riviera Maya if you want to visit Isla Mujeres. The Iberostar has price points for every budget.

Beautiful Playa Norte

Playa Norte, or North Beach, is the main beach on Isla Mujeres. The crystal clear water is calm, shallow, and perfect for relaxing. This is a great place for families because the kids can play in the sand and water without worrying about the water’s depth or crashing waves. This is also one of the best places to snorkel on the island.

Zipline When Visiting Isla Mujeres

After ziplining on the Isles Mujeres, we had lunch and relaxed in a private area overlooking the Mexican Caribbean.  We then hiked around the tiny island on a trail dotted with unusual and unique artwork, including a Mayan goddess. Known for their beautiful beaches, the crashing waves against the glistening black rocks at the other end of the island were equally remarkable.

The Island, Isla Mujeres, is a Stunning Island Paradise

Punta Sur, located at the southern end of the island, is the most eastern point in the country of Mexico. This is the island’s highest point, reaching 20 meters, and where the sun rises first. As we hiked above the cliffs, we looked down at large glistening rocks that the seawater crashed against, creating an awe-inspiring image. Isla Mujeres is only 5 miles long and a half-mile wide, but it is absolutely stunning.

Visit Isla Mujeres by Luxury Catamaran

We loved Isla Mujeres so much that we revisited the island on another vacation by way of a luxury catamaran.  Sailing across the sea sipping on drinks and listening to music, made me feel like a rock star.  It is one of the most memorable excursions we have had.

Homes on Isla Mujeres

Once we were on the island, we rented a golf cart and drove around looking at the various homes on the island. We would periodically stop for photos. If you like trinkets, there is a shopping area where the locals will use their powers of persuasion to entice you to enter their store. There is snorkeling and swimming with the sharks available for the more adventurous crowd.

Is Isla Mujeres Safe?

If you are looking for a memorable excursion, I highly recommend taking a day to visit the Isla Mujeres. Cancun Adventures offers a wide variety of tours suitable for many interests. While you may hear reports of violence in Mexico, it is rare in Isla Mujeres. If you enjoy island hopping, schedule a tour to see both Isla Contoy and Isla Mujeres in one day. Isla Contoy is an uninhabited island paradise perfect for nature lovers.

Islas Mujeres is so beautiful. Unfortunately, we had only one day there but if I ever go back, I’ll certainly spend also a couple of nights enjoying it more.

I’d love to head head and try the zip line out. I also love catermaran tours, nothing better than exploring on the water and jumping in the sea for a swim.

We have always wanted to visit Isla Mujures. So great that your resort offered a package to visit. The catamaran ride would be fun. But I would not pass on doing the zipline over the beach – over and over again!

We will be in Ventus in 2023 and will definitely take a tour to Isla Mujeres. Now to choose between the two!
